Google set to improve Analytics privacy

ADVERTISEMENTS

Google is developing a plug-in for its flagship web analytics product designed to allow users to opt-out of being tracked by the service.

Google Analytics (GA) is a free service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website. Its main highlight is that the product is aimed at marketers as opposed to webmasters and technologists from which the industry of web analytics originally grew. It is the most widely used website statistics service, currently in use at around 57% of the 10,000 most popular websites.

Web giant to offer opt-out option for its flagship web analytics product

Google Analytics group product manager Amy Chang explained that the firms engineers are currently working on finalising and testing the new opt-out functionality which is set for roll out globally in the next few weeks. As an huge enterprise-class web analytics solution, Google Analytics not only provides site owners or bloggers with information on their website traffic and marketing effectiveness, it also have much to do with privacy like for protecting user data privacy, wrote Chang.Over the past year, we have been exploring ways to offer users more choice on how their data is collected by Google Analytics.Google technologies have been criticised for infringing on user privacy with increasing regularity this year. The Analytics announcement comes as a 24 year-old Harvard Law School student filed a class action suit against the web giant alleging that its new Buzz social networking tool invaded her privacy.Although Google has made a number of changes to Buzz, many users and privacy advocates are still not satisfied with the service, feeling that they were automatically opted-in without giving their explicit consent."It is not so much that we are expecting to get millions of people hundreds of dollars," said one of the students attorneys this week."What we would like to see is a commitment from Google that it is not going to do this again the next time it launches a product."

European Web downloads cost 10 billion euros

ADVERTISEMENTS
European Web downloads cost 10 billion euros
Europeans downloaded euro10 billion worth of pirated music, film, television shows and software from the Web in 2008,
Thereby creating big loss to industry of music , movies etc all aroung the world .

The International Chamber of Commerce said its report showed that digital piracy could escalate and cost media and entertainment industries euro240 billion in retail revenue and 1.2 million jobs by 2015.

"For us, file sharing is another word for theft," Agnete Haaland, the head of the International Actors Federation told reporters.

Teens frequently pass music and movies to their friends without realizing that they are illegally sharing copyrighted material, said William Maunier, who leads the UNI trade union representing media company workers.

"You have to educate young people," he said.

Industry representatives did not say how they thought growing Internet piracy should be tackled, saying they just want people to see the extent of the problem.

They said they also wanted to show the costs to the European Parliament which last year tried unsuccessfully to challenge France's tough measures against illegal downloaders.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy had advocated a "three strikes and you're out" rule, under which Internet use would be tracked and users caught downloading would be warned twice before their Internet access would be cut off for a year.

Britain is also considering similar rules.

The report written by Tera Consultants said that more than 14 million people in the European Union work in creative industries such as television, publishing and radio.

It claims that over 185,000 jobs were lost because of digital piracy in 2008.
It's also interesting to note that illegal file sharers actually contribute far more to music industry coffers than their law-abiding peers. One survey conducted by Davos showed that 42 per cent of illegal downloaders were actually listening to their ill-gotten tunes with a view to buying the real deal, and that P2P pirates spent £77 a year on average on properly-acquired music compared to just £44 shelled out by those who comply with copyright laws.

Are machines ready to break down language barriers?

ADVERTISEMENTS

Rapid changing world has shown many revolutionary changes , Even then in this fast paced changing technology has many barriers:

We as human's can't speak all the languages , as it is far out of reach and is such a impossible task But that gap is narrowing as online translation services advance, GOOGLE translator reports has shown that many people around the world are curious to translate the laguage and communicate with other mind through that . Recently launched website Meedan translates Arabic-language news stories into English, and vice versa, and displays the two versions alongside each other. Comments in either language are instantly translated. A new site for bloggers, called Mojofiti, automatically makes posts available to readers in 27 languages. And Google now has a tool that will eventually allow anyone with a camera-phone to photograph, say, a German restaurant menu, send the image as a multimedia message to Google's servers, and get an English translation sent back to them. These services are helping the gen world wide .
All these services ultimately rely on a technique called statistical machine translation, in which software learns to translate by using brute mathematics to compare large collections of previously translated documents. It then uses the rules it has learned this way to determine the most likely translation in future. "Whenever there is a possibility of the language barrier preventing someone from doing something there should be the possibility to translate," says Franz Och, who leads machine translation research at Google. His team's Translate service can currently operate between 52 different languages and he is aiming to add more, that will be interesting to know what more languages they add and on what critarea, especially those previously ignored by machine translators. "A speaker of Bengali can only experience a tiny fraction of a per cent of the web," says Och. Though translation algorithms have improved, some human intervention is still needed to provide a translation that reads well. Meedan's news articles, for example, are machine translated and then tidied up by editors. Google's Toolkit for professional translators produces a machine translation for them to tidy up, in the process providing feedback to the software to improve its translation capabilities. With the right help even someone that speaks only a single language could produce results as good as those of a professional, says Philipp Koehn of the University of Edinburgh, UK. His service, Caitra, outputs several possible phrases if it is uncertain which one is correct. This lets a monoglot user fix garbled phrases that would otherwise be unfathomable without reading the original.

It took 15 years to realise the dream of making the Hollywood's biggest blockbuster, Avatar. The maker of film,

The renound Hollywood filmmaker was in the national capital on his maiden visit to India to attend the concluding session of two-day 9th India Today Conclave on subject "The Future of Cinema".

A producer, director, screen writer, editor and a great inventor, Cameron elaborated the making of Avatar, which recently broke all record oh his previous blockbuster in the history of international cinema, "Titanic".
Nobody ever could have imagined that someday "titanic" record wil be beaten by the same person who made those records .

"I wrote Avatar in 1995. Avatar was the most interesting part of my film career," says Cameron who envisaged a digital cinema revolution to realise his dream.

"It was not capturing the characters that was crucial, but it was CG (computer generated) which was the real challenge. I needed tight shots of CG to make the characters look real," Cameron says.

But the biggest challenge, the filmmaker admits, was to market the movie. "I wanted thousands of digital theatres around the world," he says.

However, at the end, Cameron says it was not the technology which ensures the film's success. "Story, characters and emotions are more important than technology," he concludes.

Bolywood needs to do more research: Aamir
Indian actor Aamir Khan named as MR PERFECTIONIST , who recently gave the Bollywood's biggest hit 3 Idiots, joined Cameron in the debate over the future of cinema. He supported the master filmmaker's point saying that "if a story has a message it becomes more interesting".

"A filmmaker must have an exciting story to tell," Khan says, adding, "If a story excites me, I want to be a part of it."

Appreciating Cameron's efforts in the direction of technological revolution in the cinema industry Khan felt Bollywood lagged behind in research.

"Hollywood has done much more research than Bollywood. We also need to do more research while doing our movies," Khan said.

Climate change 'makes birds shrink' in North America

Scarlet tanager

Songbirds in the US are getting smaller, and climate change is suspected as the cause.

A study of almost half a million birds, belonging to over 100 species, shows that many are gradually becoming lighter and growing shorter wings.

This shrinkage has occurred within just half a century, with the birds thought to be evolving into a smaller size in response to warmer temperatures.

However, there is little evidence that the change is harmful to the birds.

Mexico's Slim named 'world's richest' person
Mexico's Carlos Slim, named the world's richest man , He showed his first business talent as a 10-year-old kid when he filled his pockets with pesos selling drinks and snacks to his family.

Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim is the world's richest person, beats Microsoft founder Bill Gates into second spot, as the wealth of the world's billionaires grew by 50 per cent over the last year.
the son of an immigrant shopkeeper who amassed a $53.5 billion fortune and bought a major stake in the New York Times, became the first person from a developing nation to be named the world's richest person.

It is the second time since 1995 that Gates has lost the crown asthe world's richest person , estimating Slim's net worth at $53.5 billion, compared to Gates's $53 billion fortune, while investor Warren Buffett came in at No. 3 with $47 billion. This is a bis bis acheivement by the person acheiving the top spot .

As per Forbes, most of the richest people on the planet have seen their fortunes soar in the past year, despite the last year’s economic downturn , that was huge reccession but Mexico's Carlos Slim carried on his pace .
"In periods of crisis, he has always invested, and now we are beginning to see the fruits of that," Elias Ayub said.
Slim's worth surged in the past year as his cell phone holdings rebounded in value. He is the first non-American to top the list since 1994.

Arturo Elias Ayub, an executive at Slim's Telmex telephone company and the billionaire's son-in-law, expressed his feelings that a Mexican businessman is now at the top of the list.he must be a proud person too.

"The reaction is one of satisfaction, that this confidence in Mexico exists, and this confidence in our group's companies," said Elias Ayub, who frequently acts as Slim's spokesman.

Forbes said the 2010 top-10 list — which includes Slim, two billionaires from India and one from Brazil — reflects the increasing presence of developing nations, adding that Slim is the first person from one to top the list.

"They're kind of spread. It's a nice spread," she said of the list, long dominated by Americans and Europeans.
"A big reason for that is they are both very philanthropic," Forbes said. "They've given away so many billions of dollars."

Slim has donated to several causes, but not on nearly the same level. In January, he announced a $65 million donation for genetic research on cancer, type 2 diabetes and kidney disease in Mexican and Latin American populations. This means he beleives in helping the poor and needy .

Slim's conglomerate of retail, telecom, manufacturing and construction companies so dominate the Mexican commercial landscape it is often easy for Mexicans to find themselves talking over a Slim-operated cell phone at a Slim-owned shopping center waiting to pay a bill to a Slim-owned company at a Slim-owned bank. If the line is too long, they can catch a quick coffee at a Slim-owned restaurant.

Slim's Telmex company controls 83 percent of land phone lines in Mexico, and is also the leading Internet service provider. Another of his firms is the leading cell phone operator, and he wants to get into convergence services to offer television and interactive media.

Cyberwar declared as China hunts for the West’s intelligence secrets

ADVERTISEMENTS

The cyber-war mirrors the nuclear challenge in terms of the potential economic and psychological effects.
NATO and America's European allies say : increased cyber attacks originating from China that are targeting key government and intelligence computers.
This warning came from the FBI report last week detailing the "real ... and expanding threat" of cyber terrorism, especially from Al Qaeda.
Cybercrime has been the phenominun to detect the strategy of government leaking out there future plans and defence systems . This can destroy economy structure of the respective country .

FBI Director Robert Mueller said cyber-terrorists "will either train their own recruits or hire outsiders... as a means to damage both our economy and our psyche -- and countless extremists have taken this to heart,"

Mueller said that a cyber-attack could have the same impact as a "well-placed bomb." He also accused "nation-state hackers" of seeking out U.S. technology, intelligence, intellectual property and even military weapons and strategies.

cyber-attack wills surely make no loss to life but its effects can be destructive

NATO's recent warning focuses on China particularly perhaps , for secret intelligence material to be protected from a recent surge in cyberwar attacks originating in China. The cyber-penetration of key offices in NATO and the EU has led to restrictions because there are concerns that secret intelligence reports might be vulnerable, the London Times reports.

There are reportedly two forms of cyber attack: those focusing on disrupting computer systems and others involving "fishing trips" for sensitive information.

Security officials have indicated that China now poses the biggest threat -- but Beijing officails denies making such attacks.

In January, Google Inc, the world's No. 1 Internet search engine, said it had detected online attack on its systems that originated in China and said it believed at least 20 other companies had been targeted.

As google reproted , one of the primary aims of the attacks was accessing and aquiring the personal e-mail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.

Mueller said international cooperation was essential to combating online crime like the so-called Mariposa botnet incident in Spain. He added the FBI had 60 "attache" offices around the world as well as special agents embedded with police forces in countries such as Romania, Estonia and the Netherlands.

He urged businesses targeted in cyberattacks to come forward to help track down the perpetrators, saying the FBI was attuned to the delicate nature of the situation for corporations.

"We will minimize the disruption to your business, we will safeguard your privacy and your data and where necessary we will seek protective orders to preserve trade secrets and business confidentiality," he said.

Effects of cyber attacksEffects attacks

Physical effects:physical destruction of information structures with the consequences that the information system could not be used properly (DOS), to knock out electronics; with EW weapons such as EMP

Syntax effects: to attack system logic by delaying information and to develop unpredictable behaviors (viruses, trojans, hacking) using CNO tools

Semantic effects: to destroy the trust in a system by manipulation, change of information and deception that affect the decision making processPhysical

These battles are not hypothetical. Google's networks were hacked in an attack and that the company said emanated from China. And recently the security firm NetWitness reported that more than 2,500 companies worldwide were compromised in a sophisticated attack launched in 2008 and aimed at proprietary corporate data. Indeed, the recent Cyber Shock Wave simulation revealed what those of us involved in national security policy have long feared: For all our war games and strategy documents focused on traditional warfare, we have yet to address the most basic questions about cyber-conflicts.

THIS HAS TO PREVENTED AND IT CAN BE MUCH MORE WORSE AS IT LOOKS WRITE NOW. THE LOSS MAY BE MUCH MUCH BEYOND OUR IMAGINATION .
The cyber-war mirrors the nuclear challenge in terms of the potential economic and psychological effects.
